Why Anonymous Writing Heals

People have things they would have been carrying decades and fail to get the right place to dispose them. Too heavy to say in speech. Ideas that do not fit well in the dialogue. Emotions that occur late at night and vanish by morning never being solved but never forgotten.
There is space where those words are created through anonymous writing.
Somehow when nobody is looking, criticizing, judging, or anticipating a reaction, something becomes different. The stress to perform is eliminated. The need to explain softens. What is left is honesty which is usually the one that people did not know they were withholding.
Anonymity eliminates the social processes that tend to influence expression. No reputation to uphold, no expectation to be, no role to play. In the absence of an audience to identify with, the mind becomes more silent. The heart becomes braver.
This is the reason why anonymous writing has been extensively applied as a therapeutic technique. It enables individuals to project feelings that they have been holding on to too long. Verbalizing emotions- particularly those that were never confirmed is a means of rationalizing the emotional. What used to be overwhelming is something you can see, read and sit on.
It is power too when one is seen without being known. It can be very validating, knowing that some person would read what you have written and would feel it, without knowing who you are, or what is your story. It is a reminder that we all feel the same, though the experiences may be personal. The states of grief, longing, love, regret, and hope are not solitary states but common human experiences.
Self censorship is also diminished by anonymous writing. When it loses their identity, people will tend to minimize their truth in order to make it reasonable and acceptable. They do what they feel and not what they believe they should feel. Honesty of this nature is where healing normally starts.
Control is another significant feature of anonymous writing. There are lots of places where it is impossible to undo what has been said. Even on sites that are built sensibly, anonymous authors are able to return to their work in the future, to revise it, remove it or just reread it. This is a reflection of actual emotional processing. Healing is not linear. It is due to the fact that sometimes the clarity may come after days or weeks and the possibility to revise or release words signifies the fact.
Anonymous writing can be so therapeutic to read as it is to write. The expression of emotions without filters or context can leave the reader with the feeling that they are being understood when sometimes conversation fails to achieve the same. The assurance that there is a fellow in confusion, the same ache, in the quiet hoping, is a reassurance.
Anonymous writing does not substitute communication, treatment, or relationship. But very often it leads them on. It assists individuals in training to name emotions. It assists them in sitting vulnerablely. It makes them be aware of what they require before they attempt to request it.
Healing is not necessarily a dialogue. It is sometimes done silently, on a page, without even the chance of answer. That is something that Anonymous writing celebrates. It provides space to express freely, release freely, and tell the truth fearlessly.
This is why the space devoted to the anonymous writing is important. They do not require people to be prepared. They just provide them with starting point.
